What does the word Kavanna mean?

Kavanna is a Hebrew word that means: intentional, awakened, mindful and devoted to prayer.

Why does Kavanna House charge for its programs and services?

Kavanna House is a small non-profit organization. Unlike churches, which work off of weekly tithes and offerings, established endowments, and building funds, Kavanna House relies on fees and tuition money to fund our daily operations. This includes all costs associated with courses, such as supplies and modest facilitator salaries, and small salaries for four part-time staff.

Charging for our programs also enables us to provide scholarships to those for whom finances may be an issue.

What makes Kavanna House unique?

Kavanna House’s programs all run on the same group process. This process is what makes our programs unique and creates the space for growth and self-discovery. In our group discussions, there is no advice giving, no piggy-backing on what someone has just shared, and no teaching.

We use “I” language to make the experience personal rather than general, and we leave space (silence) around what has been shared. Taken together, this creates a feeling of being deeply seen and heard.

Where do I begin if I'm new to the 'contemplative world'?

If you are new to the 'contemplative world,' we would suggest that you begin with a foundational program such as Finding Presence or The Intimacy Project. Finding Presence introduces participants to Kavanna House's group process and to several contemplative spiritual practices over a period of six weeks. In this program you get a taste of the 'contemplative world.' The Intimacy Project is more like a buffet. This program is more in depth, both in terms of timeframe and experience. It occurs for five weekends over a period of about eight months and is designed to position you to experience intimacy in your relationship with God. It introduces (or re-introduces) you to contemplative spiritual practices and offers weekly communication with the program's facilitator(s) regarding your noticings and experiences with the divine.

Where did the name The Intimacy Project come from?

The Intimacy Project is Kavanna’s core program. When it came time to name the course, we wanted something that encompassed our hope for all our participants. We believe that The Intimacy Project offers people a place to deepen their intimacy with God. We also believe that we are all spiritual beings on a human journey - a project without end.
